Rule of Stone este un documentar care expune puterea arhitecturii – estetică, ideologică și strategică – în construcția Ierusalimului modern. În 1967, Israelul a cucerit Ierusalimul de Est, inclusiv Orașul Vechi, unde se află Zidul Plângerii, Muntele Templului și Haram al-Sharif. Aproape imediat, orașul a fost declarat capitala unică și indivizibilă a Statului Israel. Scopul a devenit acela de a face o eventuală reîmpărțire a orașului nu doar imposibilă material, ci și disruptivă estetic. Filmul demonstrează cum designul a devenit parte a unui război invizibil al anexării, revelând cum, asemenea britanicilor înaintea lor, autoritățile israeliene au impus ca fațadele tuturor clădirilor să fie placate cu piatră de Ierusalim, imitând arhitectura palestiniană și făcând ca dominația lor asupra orașului să pară continuă, chiar inevitabilă. Documentarul ridică întrebări despre responsabilitatea morală a arhitecților și arată cum frumusețea și abuzul pot merge mână în mână.

Rule of Stone is a documentary film that exposes the power of architecture – aesthetically, ideologically, and strategically – in the creation of modern Jerusalem. In 1967, Israel conquered East Jerusalem, including the Old City, where the Western Wall, the Temple Mount, Haram al-Sharif, are located. Almost immediately, the city was declared the united and indivisible capital of the State of Israel. And the goal became to make a re-division of the city not just materially impossible, but aesthetically disruptive. The film takes the viewer on a journey to understand how design took part in the invisible war of annexation. It shows how, like the British before them, Israelis mandated that the exterior of every building be clad in Jerusalem stone, simulating Palestinian architecture and making their domination over the city seem continuous, even inevitable. The film thus raises questions about the moral responsibility of architects and shows how beauty and abuse may go hand in hand.
